Today the new kernel 2.6.18 was released. The changes are interesting, however the new WLAN subsystem didn’t make it into this version, and we will probably have to wait until version 2.6.20 until it is included. This is kind of sad because the new subsystem would make it much easier to write WLAN drivers afaik and therefore would bring better WLAN support into the kernel.
Besides the kernel there was also the release of new ATI drivers today. As usual Phoronix covers this release with a short review. I have to admit that I’m a bit disappointed by the changelog because there is no
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap in this release – that means that you cannot use AIGLX with these new drivers properly. Well, we have to wait a month, again. I just hope that NVIDIA and ATI include this support as soon as possible because than there would be no need for the kind of non-standard XGL hacks – “everyone” could then just use AIGLX with any composition window manager he/she likes and without any special additional configurations to turn on XGL – and, without any problems which appear for XGL due to the fact that there are running technically two X servers.
However, as I said, it is not included, so we have to wait again.
